What have I been up to?
I always get asked the question of what I do during the quite, cold, wet winter months. Over the next few weeks I will try and give you an insight into my weeks between October and end of November when all golf professionals have to do their buying for the forthcoming season. I have lots of meetings with reps from all the major golf companies who come to see me at Gourock.
This past fortnight I have had preview of the new range from Callaway, Cobra, Wilson Staff, TaylorMade, Cleveland, Stuburt, Skechers and Glenmuir. Although I can't buy from all it is great to see what is hot on the street and this lets me plan my stock for next year.
Since I turned pro 18 years ago, I have always played the Ayrshire Winter Alliance. These events let me keep competitive and play some great links courses. Last week we played at Western Gailes, the course was in great condition after a mild few weeks. Although my game was a little rusty I did make a few good birdies at the tough holes resulting in a two-over-par score. The next event is at West Kilbride on Tuesday.
Race to Dundonald
Last week I mentioned the new winter competition that will result in seven of you qualifying to play in the Grand Final at Dundonald Links in March. Here is how the event will work:
- Play will be from the full white tee markers
- 18-hole monthly event will take place on 1st Sunday of each month
- 9-hole event will take place on last Wednesday of each month over the back nine
- Stableford rules will apply
- Full handicap
- Mats will be used (as per winter GGC rules)
- Handicap reductions (awaiting authorisation)
I hope this new venture will encourage some of you to play at least once each month over the winter months. Any questions please come and speak to me in-store.

We have a new senior team captain next year as Chris Robertson has been handed the reins. Here is a short newsflash from Chris:
"After another enjoyable season we now look towards next year. We hope to add to our squad of players who are eligible to participate. If you are over 55 and would like to play in the Senior League please look out for the note that will be posted in the locker room. Please add your name, contact number and email address. We intend to rotate the playing squad to ensure that all who wish to play get a game. This is a great chance to to meet golfers from kindred clubs in a relaxed atmosphere.
"There will be an annual fee of £5 per person, this helps with the running costs and also to the tea/coffee we provide for visiting players to Gourock. Fixtures will be posted as soon as they are available and each individual fixture will be posted as well.
I should notify you of some changes to the seniors format following the AGM: Play will be from the yellow tees; where possible play will be from 1st & 10th to help with getting games finished earlier and to allow for a more social lunch after your round.
I hope that many of you will come forward and take part in what is a competitive but social friendly environment."
